Manhattan, the heart of New York. The place where everything began from. The island was bought for 60 guilders (gulden, Dutch golden coin, this is around 1000 modern US dollars) by dutch and a trading post was founded on the southern part of it called New Amsterdam. Later, when city was surrounded to the English, it was renamed to New York.
Current population of the borough is 1.6 million people, 1.5 million commute to Manhattan daily to work, filling in millions square feet of business centers and skyscrapers. All major international corporations have offices on Manhattan, many of them have their headquarters here. The most famous among the corporations are: New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq, Chrysler, Bloomberg, American Express, Metlife, Chase, Bank of New York, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley.
For the above, New York is sometimes called Financial Capital of the world.
But that is not the only aspect of the city. Tourism is what the city famous for. 47 million people visit the city annually, to see the internationally recognized places like Wall Street, Times Square, Central Park, Broadway, Lincoln Center, Columbus Circle, dine in thousands of cafes and restaurants with all, really all, cuisines represented, see world-famous Broadway shows and musicals, listen to concerts at Carnegie Hall or Metropolitan Opera, visit Metropolitan Museum of Art, American Museum of Natural History, Guggenheim Museum, Museum of ModerŅ Arts, and others.
Manhattan borough is connected to Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens via several bridges and tunnels with buses and subway running over them. It is connected to
Staten Island with the
Staten Island Ferry and buses that go there through Brooklyn and Verrazano bridge.
